Pennine's History

Descending into a dank basement below Forster Square in Bradford.  A commercial radio station 'Pennine FM was born on September 16th 1975.  It was the Independent Local Radio Broadcasting Station in Bradford from the mid 1970's to the late 1980's.  When it changed name to 'Pennine FM' after a take over by 'Yorkshire Radio Network’ after lenthy talks with leagil people about Pennine Radio's name unknown to Yorkshire Radio Network the name Pennine Radio was a company in Huddersfield Pennine Radio Ltd and had been fighting with Pennines previous owners since 1975 so agreed to re name Pennine FM. Yorkshire Radio Network was based at 'Radio Hallam' in Sheffield, and was formed when 'Radio Hallam' was taken over.  FM programming continued, with its own set of jingles.  The thought behind the jingles was remarkably democratic.  The lyrics ('Pennine Radio, Hallam and Viking Radio') were re-ordered on every jingle cut, to enable prominence of each station in turn.  The tune used at the start of that of 'Pennine Radio' (and that of Viking Radio'), and the end of 'Radio Hallam'.

Taken over in the mid 1990's, the 'Metro Radio Group Plc' was formed initially of  'Metro FM', 'TFM', and 'Great North Radio', covering the Tyne Tees area.  Head Office was in 'Metro FM's' studio centre in Swalwell.  In 1990, the 'Metro Radio Group' took over the 'Yorkshire Radio Network', and inherited 'Pennine FM', 'Hallam FM', 'Viking FM', and 'Classic Gold'.  The 'Metro Radio Group' was behind 'Pennine FM's re-launch as 'The Pulse' which saw the demise of 'Pennine Radio'.

Today

Living in Bradford for some years the station manager (Wizard) enjoyed music from Pennine Radio. In those early days listening to the radio of his favorite station, and after working within radio for some time wanted to produce a radio station of his own and after reasurch into Pennine Radio history and discussions with people over the telephone from Pennine radio Ltd he discovered that he was unable to use the name Pennine Radio, and decided that the station that your listening to at this present time has been named Pennine Sound Radio but with the same values as the old station.

Great Music.
